After the loss of a pet, it can be a very sad, difficult and lonely time. Feelings of despair, depression and guilt can creep in, as well as self-doubt, especially when you have had to make the difficult decision to euthanase or rehome your pet. Going through grief is normal and it shows the true friendship, love and bond you had with your pet. Not everyone understands grief, especially when it comes to the loss of a pet, which in hand makes this a very lonely time for most people.
The JSPCA understands that when we are going through that grieving process it is important to have an outlet to use. From 2019 the JSPCA will be offering a pet bereavement service to its staff and members of the public. The aim of this service is to provide support during the grieving process of losing a pet; whether through death, separation or a missing pet.
We hope by setting up this service it provides a listening ear and an outlet to be able to talk to someone about what you are going through with the loss of a pet.
The Bereavement Service can be reached by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org where one of the trained JSPCA Bereavement Team will respond. Alternatively, you can call our main reception on 724331 and request a call back from one of our bereavement team.
Please note that the JSPCA Bereavement Service is currently only available Monday –Friday 8:00 – 17.00.
If you would like to speak to someone outside of these hours, please call the Blue Cross Bereavement Service on 0800 096 6606. This support line is open every day from 8.30 – 20.30.
Pet Memorial Service
In addition to the Bereavement Service, the JSPCA hold an annual Pet Memorial Service in early June, to commemorate World Pet Memorial Day, at their Pet Cemetery in First Tower. This provides members of the public, and staff, the opportunity to reflect, remember their pet and come together to support each other.
The JSPCA staff have undergone bereavement training provided by the Blue Cross. This training has not only helped the staff support members of the public who have lost a pet but also their colleagues and themselves during those difficult times.
The JSPCA Pet Cemetery is located at First Tower. This is a quiet and tranquil place open to the public 24/7, 365 days of the year. If you would like to discuss having a plot at the Pet Cemetery, please ring our reception team on 724331 and they will be able to assist with your enquiry.
The JSPCA own the only pet crematorium in Jersey. This means that any profits made from cremations helps to care for the animals at the JSPCA.
If you require your pet to be cremated, please ring reception on 724331 or pop into the JSPCA where we can assist you with the required paperwork and guide you through the process to make it as smooth as possible for you.
The JSPCA was originally founded to provide the general public with free euthanasia for their pets. The JSPCA has continued to provide this service by offering free euthanasia to domestic pets. We believe that offering free euthanasia will relieve the financial strain during an already difficult and sensitive time for those involved. If you feel the time has come to say goodbye to your pet, please ring reception on 724331 where they can assist you.
